Refined metal

The forum question “so how do i unlock Refined Metal?” has three answers that all work:

1. Craft it: four common metal make one refined metal. Common metal comes from small metallic debris first (it stacks fast), then barrels, cans and the large orange scrap. Do not smash everything at once — you clog the bag and end up making trips just to unload.
2. Harvest it from the blue lamps at the ends of wires. The player who asked found it himself the same evening: “it’s the blue lamp at the end of some wire”. This is the early route before you have a workbench worth using.
3. Pick it up in the frozen area. The refined metal in the “little frozen area” is what makes a gas tank and a flashlight in the PartiallyRoyal playthrough.

Refined metal feels distant at first and then becomes the bottleneck for every drill and better tool, so build a reserve rather than spending the first few units.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the game’s other choke point — a whole forum thread is titled “Lol, now I’m short aluminum”. It comes from asteroid deposits extracted with a drill, which needs a battery; the first large battery is in the destroyed luggage compartment near the train (out, right twice, lower section). Pick deposits that give what you need before you burn the energy. A few loose nodes sit in wreckage.

Two things everyone learns late:

• Nodes do not respawn. The forum’s answer: only vending machines replenish themselves. Every aluminum node you pass is one you will want later.
• Storage is not the floor. Babe’s purse holds effectively unlimited weight (250 kg tested). Put spare aluminum there.

Titanium, while you are drilling

Titanium appears as spiky chunks floating in open space and in asteroid deposits. Scan for loose spikes when you enter a new area before spending drill energy.

The wrench recipe

In the 2025 demo, the Wrench needed refined metal and aluminum; the Early Access recipe list is different in places, but the two materials remain what most early tools ask for. The tools page has the order that avoids the plastic soft-lock, and the resources table has every material with its source.
