Breathedge 2 DIY Upgrade System Explained

What DIY means here

The developers’ April 2026 post introduces it: the Man can “slap together a pretty terrible but functional prototype out of raw resources — say, a crowbar”, and then bolt “actually valuable, heavy-duty components” onto it. A weight plate turns the crowbar into a ten-kilo club; a bust of the Great Leader makes space cops salute before they attack. Their motto for the whole game is “it doesn’t matter where your hands grow from, as long as they’re golden”.

Categories and stations

The shipped build uses five categories: Heft (hitting), Edge (stabbing or cutting), Handle (grip), Protection (damage and cold) and Container (capacity). The April post listed eight (Sharp, Impact, Utility, Protective, Active, Capacity, Biological, Heavy); treat that as the design vocabulary, not the menu.

Four stations take modules: the Workbench for tools, the Nutri-Pack-O-Mat for food, the Kettle Bobby for water and the Wardrobe for the suit. The full list of modules and stats is on the DIY upgrades table.

Durability lives in the module

This is the rule that catches people. Item durability is tied to the module attached to it. When a module breaks it is gone for good — the base tool “stays with you, intact and eternal”. The developers mention a way to recover a favourite DIY item with raw resources, but nobody on the forum has found a repair action for tools or armour yet; the repair bar shows lost durability and does nothing.

Hotfix 0.8.6 fixed one related bug: modules pulled out of the food or water machine no longer reset to 100 durability.

Priorities from people who finished

  • Durability and protection first. Players who ran out of tools far from base learned this the hard way; damage modules are the fun ones, but a Scrap that survives the trip matters more.
  • Same junk, several uses. The Gear is +10 damage on the Scrap or +0.3 processing on the food machine — you find one. Decide.
  • Keep a backup tool. Craft a second Scrap before the first long trip.
  • Cardboard on the suit. It is the best all-round protection in the comparison video and it is also your cold protection.

What does not take upgrades yet

Only the Scrap, Thumper and Cutter have workbench slots. The Probe, Wrench and Twister do not (the Twister itself is craftable once you find its blueprint), and a door near the start that wants an upgraded Twister cannot be opened in this build.
