Breathedge 2 Cold Protection 100 and the Heater Chain

The quest that points at an empty wardrobe

“Cold protection 100” is a side quest that points at the wardrobe inside the train — and the wardrobe is empty, which confuses everyone. The wardrobe is not a container: it is the suit upgrade station. Click the arrows in a suit slot and it swaps in whatever protective junk you are carrying.

What counts as protection

Three materials go on the suit, all from the Protection category of the DIY system:

  • Foam — from the yellow mats.
  • Cardboard — from cardboard stacks; the best all-round choice in the Reaction Zero comparison.
  • Knitted teddy bear — from hidden chests; rarer.

A forum reply gives the target: 4 cardboard + 1 foam gets you over 100. Achievement rewards add to the total as well (the Attendant gives +2 physical protection, and other unlocks add cold). There is also a drink that grants temporary cold protection.

One player reports 117 cold protection with the quest still not completing; if that happens to you, it is a known oddity, not something you missed.

Armour breaks

Protective pieces degrade when you take damage — the top-right temperature gauge shows the suit in white at 100% and red under 20%, and mousing over the suit in the inventory shows a bar per attachment. Right now armour cannot be repaired or re-crafted, so avoid pointless fights while wearing your cold set.

The heater chain

The frozen lower area is gated by cold and opened by heaters. The prompts in the PartiallyRoyal playthrough are literal: the first heater wants glass; later ones say “repair with a light bulb and metal”. Light bulbs are unscrewed from fixtures with the Wrench, and there are more of them down in the frozen zone itself, along with loose refined metal.

One heater belongs to the Foreman and only runs after you repair the robot and pass its quiz — see the Foreman’s test. After a few heaters are running, oxygen masks form in the area and you can stay down much longer (the oxygen guide covers the rest).

The snowman side quest, the refined metal that makes a gas tank and a flashlight recipe are all down there, so the heater chain is worth finishing in one or two well-stocked trips rather than shuttling up for air after every repair.
