How the DIY system works
- Five categories: Heft — hitting things · Edge — stabbing or cutting · Handle — a comfortable hold · Protection — damage and cold · Container — capacity. The same category of junk fits several devices, so a Gear can go on the Scrap for damage or on the food machine for processing speed — pick one.
- Durability lives in the module. Break the module and it is gone; the base tool is "intact and eternal", in the developers' words. Keep a spare tool for trips far from base.
- Order of priority. Players who finished the chapter recommend durability and protection modules first, then damage; the suit's cardboard/foam layers double as cold protection for the frozen areas.
- The workbench only takes three tools. Scrap, Thumper and Cutter have slots; the Probe, Wrench and Twister do not yet.
DIY FAQ
What happens when a DIY module breaks?
It is gone for good; the base tool stays with you. Since Hotfix 0.8.6, modules pulled out of the food and water machines keep their durability instead of resetting to 100.
Can I repair tools or armour?
Not in the Early Access build. The repair bar shows lost durability, but players on the Steam forum could not find any way to restore it; armour pieces degrade when you take hits and break.
What are the upgrade categories?
Heft — hitting things; Edge — stabbing or cutting; Handle — a comfortable hold; Protection — damage and cold; Container — capacity. The April 2026 developer post listed a wider set (Sharp, Impact, Utility, Protective, Active, Capacity, Biological, Heavy); the build ships the five above.
