Breathedge 2 Food, Water and Fatigue: Stop Starving

The complaint, and the patch

The most common negative line in early Steam reviews is some version of “you have to eat every 2 minutes”. The developers heard it: Hotfix 0.8.6 on September 2 reduced food, water and fatigue drain by 15% in standard mode, and reminded everyone that Easy and Story difficulties exist and can be switched on mid-game.

The drain is still real. One player describes standard as “scavenging more for food/drinks than doing the main missions” and getting hunger to -40. The system rewards preparation, not foraging.

The two machines on the train

  • Nutri-Pack-O-Mat: put every food item you find into it and only eat what comes out. Raw finds (rotten apples, the crates you smash) poison you; processed nutri-packs do not, and you get more food per item. Its upgrades: a Gear on the knob raises processing from 0.2 to 0.5; a rusty bucket adds 10 capacity and removes the leak; a plastic barrel adds 50.
  • Kettle Bobby: ice in, water out. Rusty bucket +20 capacity, plastic barrel to 40; the filter takes protection junk — foam +0.5 processing, cardboard +0.3, knitted teddy bear +0.6.

Both are repaired with the starting resources. Do it before the Cutter; see the beginner guide.

Where food and ice come from

Ice blocks are everywhere; break them with the Scrap and do not carry more than the bag needs. Food comes from crates, vending machines and trash cans. The forum’s “regeneration” thread settles what respawns: vending machines recharge after a while (the machine even says “come back later”), trash cans refill, and one player thinks some chests, foam, panels and wires regenerate — unconfirmed. Aluminum nodes and alkali moles do not.

A hard-mode player’s routine: ten-plus water bottles, nutri-packs and oxyworms on you at all times, prepared at base, and you should never die of either meter.

Fatigue and sleep

Fatigue is the game’s way of saying “that’s enough for today”. Sleep in the bed on the train — after you beat the Bum for it in the mattress mini-game — and you get bonuses for the next outing, per the devlog’s buff system. Energy drinks stack against fatigue; the same hard-mode player reports never needing to sleep with them. Push it too long and the debuffs get worse, up to impaired vision.

Buffs and debuffs

Eating well, sleeping and staying warm give stamina and reduced consumption; rotten food, dirty ice and no sleep stack negative effects that evolve into each other. The developers describe it as “another way to stay alive longer”, not the core of the game — which is why processing your finds is the one habit that fixes most of the meters at once.
